Traditionally a color security camera was more expensive and didn’t work as well in poor light conditions. But the gap is narrowing and for most of your needs a color camera a will work pretty much the same as a black and white. The prices on color cameras have dropped considerably as well.

Choosing between Black & White and Color Cameras

With today’s technology there are only two reasons to go with a black and white camera:

  • Cost – B&W cameras are less expensive
  • Darkness of the area being covered – B&W still outperform color in a very dark environment.

On the other hand color security cameras are good for:

  • Daylight surveillance – were capturing color is important
  • Increased resolution – when seeing the details are important

Color security camera prices range from as low as $75 to $800, as they vary in resolution, image quality and reliability. Also keep in mind that most cameras don’t include a lens, so you need to pay extra for the lens.
